Chicago’s holiday survival guide

October 20, 2009

daley plaza holiday

Even though our recent blogs on the improving economy were rightly optimistic, that doesn’t necessarily mean that small businesses are seeing more money in their bank accounts (yet).  After a year of frugality and belt tightening, you are probably ready to loosen up and kiss 2009 good-bye!  Show your staff and loyal clients extra appreciation during this festive season.  Our vibrant city offers plenty of options to make merry without draining the bank.  Dining and entertainment are probably areas where they have trimmed their personal budgets, so give them the chance to get out and have some fun.

The hospitality industry is finding creative ways to compete for your business this year.  Deals abound, especially if you plan strategically.  Take your team to dinner and give them a gift that is free for you by dining at any Lettuce Entertain You restaurant.  They are awarding a $25 holiday Bonus certificate for every $100 in Gift Cards purchased between November 1 and December 30, 2009.   Smaller venues are offering deals too.   La Madia Pizzeria at 59 W. Grand is offering $25 gift certificates for every $100 spent on holiday parties booked by Nov. 15.   If you have a favorite restaurant in mind, give them a call and see what deals they are offering for the holidays.

Local entertainment can also be fun and affordable.  A great way to kick off the season with a small group is to attend a free caroling concert under the Bean in Millennium Park.   If you are planning to provide a night out for a larger group, take a private trolley holiday lights tour for only $23 per person.   Or for a treat they can use with family or friends throughout the year, give gift certificates for the Imax at Navy Pier.  Any gesture will certainly be appreciated.

Finding a way for your business to help someone in need would make poignant addition to your year end celebrations.  The Greater Chicago Food Depository is a worthy cause to consider during the holidays.  The food distribution center is always looking for donations or volunteers.  For a finishing touch, mail out greeting cards to vendors, delivery people and any one else whose work influences your business.  Include a brief note of thanks for their important contribution.  You can support a good cause by purchasing your cards from Chicago Lights Tutoring, whose cards are designed by participants in their tutoring program, which serves children from low-income families across Chicago.

Hot Chicago deals

June 26, 2009

lake sunrise

The arrival of hot weather this year coincided with the summer solstice, a rare coincidence!  Usually we don’t have to wait until the end of June for warmth.  Now that it’s finally here why not make the most of it?   Whether you are determined to be productive or in need of rejuvenation, doing what you want for free is the best way to spend the hot summer days.  Here are several recommendations from the staff at The Suites Collection for free deals near our business centers.

Grant Park July 4th

Celebrate the 4th of July on Millennium Park’s Great Lawn at the Grant Park Music Festival’s first-ever Independence Day concert at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion.  The lively event begins at 1:30 p.m. and will include readings of the Declaration of Independence and other patriotic speeches.  Music performances of ragtime, country music and turn-of-the-century waltzes will be performed by the Northside Southpaws, a Chicago mandolin/guitar duo.  Navy Pier’s fireworks display starts at 10:15 p.m. on the 4th.  This is not to be confused with the official Grant Park fireworks display which will be held on the 3rd of July.  The fireworks are a spectacular display of over 5,000 aerial devices and shells.  Festivities kick off at 7:30 p.m. on July 3rd with a performance by the Grant Park Orchestra at the Petrillo Music Shell and the fireworks display beginning at 9:30 p.m.

During the long winter, we so often forgo a proper lunch break and stay inside to keep warm.  Now that outside temperatures are inviting, we prefer to step out of the office for our lunch hour and enjoy free downtown tours and museums.  Take a free 45-minute tour of the exhibition A Conversation with Chicago: Contemporary Sculptures from China led by members of the Millennium Park staff and learn more about this spectacular art, never before seen in the United States.  On any given day, choose to explore nature, science, history or culture at one of the city’s Museum Free Days

If you are busy being a worker bee this summer, there are great “Summer School” freebies to help increase your business acumen.  Free online business classes available through the US Small Business Association include:

- Small Business Primer: Guide to Starting a Business

- How to Prepare a Business Plan

The city that never sleeps is keeping busy this summer with, “Chicago Business Works”, seminars hosted by the Chicago Department of Business Affairs.  Now in its third year, this series of free seminars connects entrepreneurs and new business owners with exhibitors who service small businesses, other business owners and government leaders.  Events are free and registration is not required.

Summer seminar dates:

- June 25 – Harry S. Truman College, 1145 W. Wilson

- September 10 – Harlold Washington College, 30 E. Lake St.

Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by a speaking program, workshops and exhibitors.

As we bask in the day’s warming sunshine, our minds wander to the entertaining outdoor activities available for those of us lucky enough to live or work in Chicago.  From fountains and festivals to outdoor concerts and markets, we Chicagoans know how to take advantage of the perks that come along in spring and summer.  It is with great pleasure that we present The Suites Collection’s annual installment of warm weather to-dos for our tenants and friends.  Mark your calendars, we’ll meet you there!

Listen to beautiful music while lounging in Chicago’s “front yard” at The Grant Park Music Festival. This series of free classical music under the stars runs June 11th – August 16th.  No advance purchase needed!  Lawn and general seating in the Pritzker Pavilion is free, or if you prefer to be in the reserved forward seating area, you can make arrangements here.  Grant Park also boasts Jazz Fest, Blues Fest, Taste of Chicago, Celtic Fest, Viva Chicago, and many others, so visit the Mayor’s Office of Special Events to find one to your liking.

rivercruise

Court House Executive Offices, located at 101 W. Grand, is just four blocks north of the picturesque Chicago River.  Catch the great riverside views from a $2 water taxi ride or indulge in a nice evening out with dinner and dancing while cruising along the river and Lake Michigan.  Pick the trip that’s right for you by reading Yelp reviews of Chicago River cruises

Another great way to enjoy the river is to Dine al fresco at Fulton’s on the River.  They are now featuring Happy Hour Monday through Friday from 4 – 6pm, where you can enjoy the new bar menu and half price signature snacks in the Murdoch Lounge.

Across from Theatre District Business Center, Daley Plaza’s farmers market offers a wide selection of fresh and homemade fare for your impromptu casual lunch.  The market is held every Thursday from May 14th to Oct 15th, and is the perfect place to purchase produce, baked goods and flowers for a mid-day picnic.   There are plenty of grassy spots along the lake and river for grabbing a quick bite.  We prefer to enjoy our picnics in the tranquil courtyard at Tree Studios.  Won’t you join us?

Time for fun

February 13, 2009

snow-sculpture

So many small business owners are feeling overburdened right now that a dose of good fun is recommended!  Participating in some of these upcoming Chicago events may be just what’s needed to refresh our over-worked spirits.  We’ve made it through the winter and the long spring is just beginning, so head out after work or on a weekend day and blow off some steam in our hard working city!

Snow Days Chicago is a free five-day winter festival on Michigan Avenue in Grant Park.  It’s happening now and continuing through Feb. 16.  The festival features a national snow sculpting competition, dog sled demonstrations, a snowboard rail jam and activities for kids.  Despite the recent rash of warm weather, they protected snow blocks ahead of time so the festival can still happen.  Watch as the park is transformed into a winter wonderland, showcasing over 27 beautiful and unique sculptures made entirely out of snow!

The Chicago Park District’s ice skating rinks are still open through Saturday, Feb. 28, weather permitting.  Visit one in your neighborhood or if you are downtown you can go to the Daley Bicentennial Plaza in Grant Park at 337 E. Randolph St.   Admission is free and skate rentals are $6.  If being outside doesn’t fit your mood, check out The Chicago Auto Show beginning today at McCormick place and continuing through Feb. 22.  Visit the website for details and a link to purchase inexpensive tickets.

Make your plans now for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities.  The downtown parade is on Saturday, March 14th at 12 noon.  The parade route runs from Balbo to Monroe down Columbus Dr.  After the parade, view the newly-greened river and head to Poag Mahones at 333 S. Wells for an award winning burger.   They’ve got the Shannon Rovers Irish Pipe Band booked for entertainment throughout the afternoon.  Or you can head out to the South Side Irish Parade on Sunday, March 15 at 12 noon.  This parade runs on Western Ave from 103rd to 115th Street.  Officially St. Patrick’s Day is on Tuesday March 17th which conveniently coincides with the opening round game of the 2009 NCAA basketball tournament, also known as “March Madness”.  Poag Mahones is hosting The Shannon Rovers all afternoon on Tuesday, too, so there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy one of this city’s most celebrated holidays and take your mind off of the grind, if even for an hour or two.

Give thanks by giving back

volunteer

According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, the number of volunteers in the Chicago area is down by over 15% this year.   That’s the bad news.   The good news is that 2008 isn’t over yet!  Celebrate this season of giving by volunteering your time for a worthy organization in our community.

Visit the volunteer matchmaking site at the Community Resource Network to find an opportunity that connects with your individual interests or skill set.   Search by keyword, location or both to find the right fit.  Their database represents a wide range of organizations and immediately gives you all the basic information you need to shop around for a cause that inspires you.

Food is a large part of our holiday traditions.  For those that don’t have enough, this is a particularly difficult season.  Two wonderful institutions supply Chicagoans in need with food year round.  On the north side, Lakeview Pantry distributes over one million pounds of food each year to individuals in that neighborhood.   On the south side, the Greater Chicago Food Depository distributes the equivalent of more than 95,000 meals every day.  Both of these organizations offer ways to assist them in their efforts and directly improve someone’s life.

Expand your social and business network by participating regularly with a club that offers a variety of volunteering programs and events.  One Brick is a volunteer organization that takes the planning out of your hands and lists upcoming events on a web calendar.  You can join them for as few or as many activities as you want and there is no charge to attend.   They usually tack on dinner or drinks after their events making it a good way to give while also enjoying some community time of your own.

Follow your heart’s desires by reaching out to a known cause that has always meant something to you.  Love animals?  Volunteer for the Anti-Cruelty Society.  Opera fan?  Volunteer with Lyric Opera of Chicago.  Fascinated by architecture?  Reach out to the Chicago Architecture Foundation.   This city is filled with worthy non profits offering a vast array of missions for you to nurture.  Find the one that excites you and try volunteering for one fundraising or outreach event.  Then, if you feel satisfied, you can join their continuing efforts.

In spite of the economic outlook, plan something meaningful with your family and friends for the holidays.  This time of year is for reflection and celebration.  Do the very best you can to enjoy every minute of these next few weeks.  Chicago has plentiful opportunities to give back to our community and it won’t cost you anything.   Give back this year and feel grateful for what you have.

Holiday party places in Chicago

October 22, 2008

A few weeks from now the trees along Michigan Avenue will be bright with lights and the store windows will glisten with holiday gifts.  Every restaurant and hotel will be brimming with revelers enjoying their company parties.   The best locations are booking right now!  This year, plan ahead to have a great holiday event.   Is your company the type to linger over 6 courses with wine pairings or more likely to order cold beer and pizza?  No matter your tastes, the holidays are a time to celebrate and appreciate the people who make your company run all year long.

If you like the old swanky classics, Rosebud’s Ballo Restaurant offers a wine room for private parties accommodating up to 30 guests.  Located at 445 N. Dearborn, Ballo is the ideal juxtaposition of a great Italian restaurant and fun-loving nightspot. The beat of the music, sparkling disco ball and plasma screens covering the walls set the party mood inside this unique space, converted from a 50’s diner.

Chicago’s new glamor scene is at David Burke’s Primehouse inside River North boutique hotel, The James, at 616 N. Rush.  Dinner highlights include steaks dry-aged in their onsite salt cave and dishes like the spicy “angry lobster”.   The “cheesecake lollipops” are the notable dessert.  After dinner, everyone can relax in the J Bar, with deconstructed cocktails like the signature “James” served in a glass coated in a raspberry candy shell.   The innovative dishes, modern design elements and video art installations will give your guests great memories.

Enjoy the stunning views of the Chicago River and city skyline and hold your celebration at Fulton’s on the River, 315 N. LaSalle. They offer seven distinctive spaces for private events including the plush “Murdoch Lounge” for a casual event or cocktail party, the “Main Branch Room” with windows overlooking the water or the “Riverfront Room” with access to the outdoor veranda.

Hub 51, named for its location at 51 W. Hubbard, has a lounge called “Sub 51″ on its lower level that doubles as a private-party space.  This popular new restaurant from Lettuce Entertain You creatively blends entertainment, nightlife, and dining with fun nuances like quirky comments on the menu and the beer tap in the hostess booth.

For a sophisticated affair, hold your event at the Courtyard Marriot – Magnificent Mile .  The chefs and staff of the chic restaurant, Viand, will cater your party in an event space in the Marriot or in Viand’s private wine library.   Colleagues and guests from out of town or the suburbs will find it convenient to stay overnight at the hotel and indulge in the great holiday shopping on Michigan Avenue.

Why not call your favorite place and see if they provide rooms or menus for special events – most do! Restaurants like Shaw’s Crab House offer party menus featuring shrimp, lobster, seasonal crab dishes, sushi and regional oysters on the half shell.   La Madia at 59 W. Grand has a private wine and pizza tasting room for you and your guests to enjoy their artisanal pizzas and their full global wine list.  Creative and festive options abound in Chicago!  Wherever you go this season, raise a toast to each other to recognize your accomplishments in 2008.   Happy holidays.

Chicago’s Fall Festivities

October 3, 2008

Welcome this year’s fall season by enjoying the new batch of city events!  Even though the winters here linger the longest, we experience four distinct seasons of weather and Chicagoans really know how to celebrate them individually.  Fall in Chicago is symbolized by changing leaves, pumpkin patches and the Daley Plaza fountain turning orange.  Annual outdoor activities like the marathon and  skating help enhance the fall fun.

Even though the Daley Plaza market comes to an end on Oct. 2nd, the Federal Plaza farmers market at Adams & Dearborn continues through Oct. 28.  Walk through the market to gather fall’s final harvest, and then head to the Gallery 37 Center for the Arts on October 9th for their “End of Season” cooking class.  You will learn how to prepare fresh vegetable dishes that are particularly appropriate for fall.  The class is in their state-of-the-art professional training kitchen and costs $30.  Pre registration is required

On Friday, October 17th, Daley Plaza will transform into “Franken Plaza” for the city’s annual “Chicagoween” celebration.  Head over during your lunch hour to watch the antics of Midnight Circus, the high flying aerial ensemble of acrobats, contortionists and live musicians, with their incredible performing pooch.  See the full schedule for all the festivities including pumpkin decorating, scary movie nights and the Halloween costume parade.

Timed to coincide with the 2008 Presidential election, the exhibition “The Art of Democracy” is part of this year’s Chicago Artists Month.  This exhibit displays works by 60 printmakers whose art is concerned with democracy, social activism and political change.  Organized by the New York Society of Etchers it includes 25 Chicago-based artists who continue a tradition of using poster and print media as a vehicle for social advocacy and propaganda.  Located at the Loyola University Museum of Art, 820 North Michigan Avenue.  Suggested Admission, $6.

Cheer for the participants running the Chicago Marathonon October 12th.  This year’s race features Romania’s newly crowned Olympic women’s gold medalist, Constantina Tomescu-Dith.  Afterwards, congratulate them at the free post party in Butler Field at Columbus & Jackson.  The party has festival-like food and beverages, live music and entertainment.

At the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Washington Street, the 16,000-square-foot-Millennium Park plaza Ice Skating Rink offers one of the best views of Chicago’s famed Michigan Avenue.  Skating on the rink is free and skate rental is available for $9.  The rink opens on November 12th and you can skate every day from 10am until 10pm, weather permitting.  Don’t despair at the thought of this activity requiring a big chill; the rink has its own state-of-the-art chiller system that can maintain the ice even in the event of unseasonably warm weather!  But, we probably won’t be that lucky.
