Give thanks by giving back

volunteer

According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, the number of volunteers in the Chicago area is down by over 15% this year.   That’s the bad news.   The good news is that 2008 isn’t over yet!  Celebrate this season of giving by volunteering your time for a worthy organization in our community.

Visit the volunteer matchmaking site at the Community Resource Network to find an opportunity that connects with your individual interests or skill set.   Search by keyword, location or both to find the right fit.  Their database represents a wide range of organizations and immediately gives you all the basic information you need to shop around for a cause that inspires you.

Food is a large part of our holiday traditions.  For those that don’t have enough, this is a particularly difficult season.  Two wonderful institutions supply Chicagoans in need with food year round.  On the north side, Lakeview Pantry distributes over one million pounds of food each year to individuals in that neighborhood.   On the south side, the Greater Chicago Food Depository distributes the equivalent of more than 95,000 meals every day.  Both of these organizations offer ways to assist them in their efforts and directly improve someone’s life.

Expand your social and business network by participating regularly with a club that offers a variety of volunteering programs and events.  One Brick is a volunteer organization that takes the planning out of your hands and lists upcoming events on a web calendar.  You can join them for as few or as many activities as you want and there is no charge to attend.   They usually tack on dinner or drinks after their events making it a good way to give while also enjoying some community time of your own.

Follow your heart’s desires by reaching out to a known cause that has always meant something to you.  Love animals?  Volunteer for the Anti-Cruelty Society.  Opera fan?  Volunteer with Lyric Opera of Chicago.  Fascinated by architecture?  Reach out to the Chicago Architecture Foundation.   This city is filled with worthy non profits offering a vast array of missions for you to nurture.  Find the one that excites you and try volunteering for one fundraising or outreach event.  Then, if you feel satisfied, you can join their continuing efforts.

In spite of the economic outlook, plan something meaningful with your family and friends for the holidays.  This time of year is for reflection and celebration.  Do the very best you can to enjoy every minute of these next few weeks.  Chicago has plentiful opportunities to give back to our community and it won’t cost you anything.   Give back this year and feel grateful for what you have.

Holiday party places in Chicago

October 22, 2008

A few weeks from now the trees along Michigan Avenue will be bright with lights and the store windows will glisten with holiday gifts.  Every restaurant and hotel will be brimming with revelers enjoying their company parties.   The best locations are booking right now!  This year, plan ahead to have a great holiday event.   Is your company the type to linger over 6 courses with wine pairings or more likely to order cold beer and pizza?  No matter your tastes, the holidays are a time to celebrate and appreciate the people who make your company run all year long.

If you like the old swanky classics, Rosebud’s Ballo Restaurant offers a wine room for private parties accommodating up to 30 guests.  Located at 445 N. Dearborn, Ballo is the ideal juxtaposition of a great Italian restaurant and fun-loving nightspot. The beat of the music, sparkling disco ball and plasma screens covering the walls set the party mood inside this unique space, converted from a 50′s diner.

Chicago’s new glamor scene is at David Burke’s Primehouse inside River North boutique hotel, The James, at 616 N. Rush.  Dinner highlights include steaks dry-aged in their onsite salt cave and dishes like the spicy “angry lobster”.   The “cheesecake lollipops” are the notable dessert.  After dinner, everyone can relax in the J Bar, with deconstructed cocktails like the signature “James” served in a glass coated in a raspberry candy shell.   The innovative dishes, modern design elements and video art installations will give your guests great memories.

Enjoy the stunning views of the Chicago River and city skyline and hold your celebration at Fulton’s on the River, 315 N. LaSalle. They offer seven distinctive spaces for private events including the plush “Murdoch Lounge” for a casual event or cocktail party, the “Main Branch Room” with windows overlooking the water or the “Riverfront Room” with access to the outdoor veranda.

Hub 51, named for its location at 51 W. Hubbard, has a lounge called “Sub 51″ on its lower level that doubles as a private-party space.  This popular new restaurant from Lettuce Entertain You creatively blends entertainment, nightlife, and dining with fun nuances like quirky comments on the menu and the beer tap in the hostess booth.

For a sophisticated affair, hold your event at the Courtyard Marriot – Magnificent Mile .  The chefs and staff of the chic restaurant, Viand, will cater your party in an event space in the Marriot or in Viand’s private wine library.   Colleagues and guests from out of town or the suburbs will find it convenient to stay overnight at the hotel and indulge in the great holiday shopping on Michigan Avenue.

Why not call your favorite place and see if they provide rooms or menus for special events – most do! Restaurants like Shaw’s Crab House offer party menus featuring shrimp, lobster, seasonal crab dishes, sushi and regional oysters on the half shell.   La Madia at 59 W. Grand has a private wine and pizza tasting room for you and your guests to enjoy their artisanal pizzas and their full global wine list.  Creative and festive options abound in Chicago!  Wherever you go this season, raise a toast to each other to recognize your accomplishments in 2008.   Happy holidays.

Chicago’s Fall Festivities

October 3, 2008

Welcome this year’s fall season by enjoying the new batch of city events!  Even though the winters here linger the longest, we experience four distinct seasons of weather and Chicagoans really know how to celebrate them individually.  Fall in Chicago is symbolized by changing leaves, pumpkin patches and the Daley Plaza fountain turning orange.  Annual outdoor activities like the marathon and  skating help enhance the fall fun.

Even though the Daley Plaza market comes to an end on Oct. 2nd, the Federal Plaza farmers market at Adams & Dearborn continues through Oct. 28.  Walk through the market to gather fall’s final harvest, and then head to the Gallery 37 Center for the Arts on October 9th for their “End of Season” cooking class.  You will learn how to prepare fresh vegetable dishes that are particularly appropriate for fall.  The class is in their state-of-the-art professional training kitchen and costs $30.  Pre registration is required

On Friday, October 17th, Daley Plaza will transform into “Franken Plaza” for the city’s annual “Chicagoween” celebration.  Head over during your lunch hour to watch the antics of Midnight Circus, the high flying aerial ensemble of acrobats, contortionists and live musicians, with their incredible performing pooch.  See the full schedule for all the festivities including pumpkin decorating, scary movie nights and the Halloween costume parade.

Timed to coincide with the 2008 Presidential election, the exhibition “The Art of Democracy” is part of this year’s Chicago Artists Month.  This exhibit displays works by 60 printmakers whose art is concerned with democracy, social activism and political change.  Organized by the New York Society of Etchers it includes 25 Chicago-based artists who continue a tradition of using poster and print media as a vehicle for social advocacy and propaganda.  Located at the Loyola University Museum of Art, 820 North Michigan Avenue.  Suggested Admission, $6.

Cheer for the participants running the Chicago Marathonon October 12th.  This year’s race features Romania’s newly crowned Olympic women’s gold medalist, Constantina Tomescu-Dith.  Afterwards, congratulate them at the free post party in Butler Field at Columbus & Jackson.  The party has festival-like food and beverages, live music and entertainment.

At the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Washington Street, the 16,000-square-foot-Millennium Park plaza Ice Skating Rink offers one of the best views of Chicago’s famed Michigan Avenue.  Skating on the rink is free and skate rental is available for $9.  The rink opens on November 12th and you can skate every day from 10am until 10pm, weather permitting.  Don’t despair at the thought of this activity requiring a big chill; the rink has its own state-of-the-art chiller system that can maintain the ice even in the event of unseasonably warm weather!  But, we probably won’t be that lucky.

Lunchtime in River North

September 5, 2008

After we published our last restaurant list, we received so many more great recommendations for restaurants in River North that we decided to serve up another course.  Here are ten more restaurants you don’t want to miss when dining near our business centers.

Frontera Grill

Frontera Grill

Two winners of the prestitious James Beard Award can be found a block away from Court House Executive Offices.  Carrie Nahabedian, chef and co-owner of NAHA at 500 N. Clark, won the James Beard asard for “Best Chef Great Lakes” this year.  NAHA’s food blends Calofornian and Mediterranean flavors and their extensive wine list is created “with the philosophy that food and wine are not only to complimnet each other, but to inspire and touch all of our senses”.  Right across the street at 449 N. Clark are Frontera Grill and Topolobampo, where owner Rick Bayless won the James Beard Award for “Best American Chef: Midwest” in 1991 and “National Chef of the Year” in 1995.  We are expecting a third concept in the very near future.

Fulton's on the River

Fulton's on the River

Before the weather turns cold (for good) head to Fulton’s on the River at 315 N. LaSalle for the seafood, the steak and a seat on the patio overlooking the action on the Chicago River.  No time to sit back and enjoy the view?  For quick and light fare, try the new Einstein’s Bros.  Bagels at 400 N. Dearborn for a sandwhich soup and salad or a bagel with a shmear.

Hub 51

Hub 51

Hub 51, at 51 W. Hubbard, opened recently and caters to cravings.  Richard Melman’s sons, RJ and Jerrod, have created a broad menu with everything from seafood and sushi to tacos and burgers in a great, soaring loft space with a very popular bar.  Look for the red high heel.  If you are in the mood for authentic regional cuisine, Ben Pao at 52 W. Illinios or India House at 59 W. Grand offer delicious international dining and have affordable lunch specials.

Wind down for your week at Shaw’s Crab House or its Oyster Bar.  This retro seafood house at 21 E. Hubbard offers an exceptional selection of fish and oysters flown in daily.  Then, head to Pops for Champagne on the corner of State and Ohio streets to jazz up your life with live music most nights of the week.  Serving more than 125 champagnes & Sparkling wines in addition to small plates and desserts, Pops does this all in one of the most celebrated buildings in the city, Tree Studios.

Rockit Burger

Rockit Burger

There are some really great perks for those of us working in River North and downtown Chicago.  Lake views, river walks and flagship shopping make it easy to fill lunch hours with pleasure.  One of the best ways to find lunch time happiness is dining at a local restaurant.  Here is a delicious list of Suites Collection favorites for dining near our business centers whether with friends or entertaining for business.

La Madia

La Madia

The swankiest new pizza place in Chicago is La Madia, at 59 W. Grand.  The floor to ceiling windows draw you inside.  In warm weather, the windows are open and it feels like you’re dining al fresco and, in cold weather, a cozy seat by the fire will make you forget your worries.   Another great place to escape from the grind is the high-octane vibe at Rockit Bar & Grill at 22 W. Hubbard.  The wide ranging menu makes it an ideal location for group outings.  We celebrated a team birthday there recently and we highly recommend the sweet potato fries!

Ruth's Chris

Ruth's Chris

If you have someone in from out of town, they are going to want a steak while in Chicago.  Take them to Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse at 431 N. Dearborn.   We had our company holiday party there last year and we lingered for hours over the delicious meal.  Their professional staff took special care of us all evening.  On the other hand, if you are looking for a dining experience to make you feel like you are away of Chicago, try Brasserie Jo, an excellent French brasserie at 59 W. Hubbard.

Potbelly's

Potbelly

When in a hurry, don’t settle for a convenience store sandwich at your desk.   Grab a custom made sandwich and chips and slip into a booth at Potbelly Sandwich Works at 508 N. Clark.   During weekday lunch hours, enjoy live music in their dining room.  There is always a stack of free Chicago Readers or The Onion waiting for you.  Corner Bakery is another easy and quick alternative right downstairs from Theatre District Business Center at 60 West Randolph.

Corner Bakery

Corner Bakery

Adjacent to the Corner Bakery on the corner of Randolph & Dearborn is Petterino’s, named for Arturo Petterino, the long-time maitre d’ of the Pump Room during the heyday of stars and socialites.  Petterino’s is a good choice for entertaining clients.  The food is superb and the walls are decorated with caricatures of actors and politicians – a guaranteed conversation starter because there is always a story to go with them!  If you’ve got tickets to a show at The Goodman or The Ford Center, the location is perfect.

Maggiano's Little Italy

Maggiano

Need some comfort food?  Feeding the gang?  Maggiano’s Little Italy will take care of you.  Everything can be served family style, so take some friends or plan to leave with a doggie bag.  Located at the corner of State & Grand downstairs from Court House Executive Offices, the Lettuce Entertain You restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating and seemingly unlimited choices of pastas, meats and seafood.

Shared Office Spotlight: Tree Studios wins award

State Street view of Tree Studios

Nestled between high rises, Tree Studios is an internationally recognized landmark building that dates back to 1894.   Now fully restored, the complex houses a collection of retail shops and galleries as well as a shared studio environment for the creative arts.  These unique work spaces are available for lease through The Suites Collection.  We welcome tenants who are artists or have artistically related businesses.  Current occupants include painters, writers, architects and graphic designers, among others.

Judge Lambert Tree

Judge Lambert Tree

The story of Tree Studios continues to enhance our city’s architectural prestige.  Earlier this year, the studios and surrounding buildings were celebrated through the Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) Awards for Excellence: The Americas competition. The Awards are widely known as the land use industry’s most prestigious recognition program honoring creativity, vision and best practices in land use.  Original owners Judge & Mrs. Lambert Tree, whose likenesses are sculptured at the entrance to the building, certainly made good use of their land by conceiving a building that continues to enhance the work of artists more than a century later.

During a recent presentation to the Burnham Committee, Alderman Edward Burke praised the restoration of Tree Studios by saying, “We are lucky to find ourselves in this picturesque location, a uniquely Chicago institution that once housed the nation’s oldest known artist studios. Like the city itself, Tree Studios faced adversity and finds itself still standing tall.  As it evolves and continues to be an important part of the artistic and cultural landscape of Chicago, it provides a shining example of the living, breathing soul of our city, which is defined by its past, present, and future.”

Summer Fun

July 15, 2008

Despite the fact that warm weather feels like it just arrived, we’ve only got 6 weeks left until Labor Day weekend.  Why not take advantage of the remaining season by having some fun after work in Chicago?

The Suites Collection executive offices are located in River North and Downtown.   Both neighborhoods offer plenty of special events to enjoy this summer.

Everywhere you look in the loop on Thursdays, you’ll see someone carrying a bouquet of beautiful fresh flowers.  It’s likely they just visited the Daley Plaza Farmers market across the street from Theater District Business Center.   Local farms set up tents selling fresh produce, jams, breads and other homemade goodies from 7am – 3pm.

After work, grab a picnic supper & meet your friends in Grant Park for a movie. Beginning tonight, movies play Tuesdays at sunset for the next 6 weeks.  Blankets or lawn chairs are recommended! Here’s the schedule:

July 15: 8:57 p.m. “All About Eve”

July 22: 8:51 p.m. “The Odd Couple”

July 29: 8:44 p.m. “The Blues Brothers”

Aug 5: 8:35 p.m. “The Day the Earth Stood Still”

Aug12: 8:25 p.m. “Touch of Evil”

Aug 19: 8:15 p.m. “An Affair to Remember”

Aug 26: 8:03 p.m. “Grease”

For a unique sightseeing experience near Court House Executive Offices head down to the River Walk and view “Chicago Looks: Portraits by Chicago Artists”.  These portraits reveal the artists’ personal perspectives on Chicago and their approaches range from literal portraiture to surreal interpretation.  Be sure to check out the portrait between Clark & LaSalle titled “The Pit Broker” by Rebecca Byrne, owner of Studio 12 Fine Art located in Tree Studios.

Speaking of Tree Studios – our historic center for the creative arts at 4 E. Ohio is a great location with shopping, dining and entertainment all in one building.  After work one evening, enjoy the pleasures of al fresco dining accompanied by sparking wine at Pops for Chicago. Afterwards, stroll up State Street from Ohio to Ontario exploring the distinctive stores.  Then head into PIE at 615 N. State St. where you can sip a cappuccino, indulge in a delectable dessert and savor the views of the interior courtyard (pictured above).
Happy Summer everyone!

Starting your own small business in Chicago?

July 10, 2008

Pursuing your dreams to start your own business is a brave decision.  Luckily, if you open a small company in Chicago there are many resources to help you get off the ground.

You won’t have to do it alone!

Gaining local support for your entrepreneurial spirit is important and the value of expert advice cannot be overstated.  Here are links to a few of our favorite small business resources in the area:

BIZ CONNECTION is the site that will give you information about how to open or purchase a business in the City of Chicago.  It covers many issues facing start-ups such as registering with the State of Illinois, hiring employees, and locating potential funding sources.

SCORE provides free counseling and low-cost workshops taught by working and retired executives and business owners.  This national non-profit was founded in 1964 and has fourteen branch locations in the Chicago area. In addition, they offer FREE BUSINESS TEMPLATES.

A VIRTUAL OFFICE from The Suites Collection will provide you with a prestigious business address, a receptionist to answer your calls and receive your packages and 24 hour access to private voice mail.  The Virtual Office package is a great way to enhance your company’s image from the very beginning.  Conference rooms are also available.

COMPUTER TRAINING source offers computer classes in downtown Chicago, Schaumberg and Naperville.  It is highly likely that increasing your knowledge in Microsoft Office, Web Design, Graphics or Accounting software will save you time and money once your business gets busy.  These hands on classes typically run for one or two days and the trainers are both knowledgeable and personable.  A big bonus with CTS is that you receive thirty days of technical support with the purchase of a class.

COMPUTER CONSULTANTS can assist you in everything from making decisions about purchases to setting up equipment to eliminating technical problems down the line.  PCS International has an excellent team with quick response and years of experience assisting small businesses.

Your local BUSINESS ASSOCIATION can take care of much of your preliminary research.  Their websites and newsletters provide statistics on economic studies, maps, market surveys, ongoing redevelopment plans and other issues pertinent to new business development.  Membership in these groups will give you access to their educational and social networking events, too.  Well regarded business organizations in Chicago include the Chicago Loop Alliance, Greater North Michigan Avenue Association, River North Association, and Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce.

LOANS offered by the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity support a wide array of programs and services designed to help Illinois businesses thrive.  They emphasize programs designed to provide small businesses — particularly minority and female entrepreneurs — with the resources they need to succeed and grow their business opportunities. The Small Business Association of America  also provides numerous loan programs.

You may be eligible for CERTIFICATION as a Minority or Women-owned Business through the City of Chicago.  This designation promotes contracting opportunities and carries out the mandates of Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action requirements.
